Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026: The Biggest Announcements, Trailers and Reveals

The Witcher, Gears of War, Final Fantasy and more took the spotlight at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026. Discover all the major reveals.

The Gamescom Opening Night Live (ONL) 2026 officially kicked off gamescom in Cologne, Germany. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the roughly two-hour showcase featured more than 50 announcements, trailers and release-date reveals.

The event combined major returning franchises with new projects, with several Japanese and Chinese developers also taking centre stage.

Here are some of the biggest announcements of the night.


The Return of Geralt of Rivia

CD PROJEKT RED surprised The Witcher community with two major announcements:

  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Remastered: A major visual and gameplay upgrade arriving as a free upgrade for existing owners on qualifying platforms. It launches on September 29, 2026, with improvements to combat, visuals, performance and exploration. Players who own the base version of The Witcher 3 will also receive both expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, for free.
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past: A new paid expansion featuring Geralt and a completely new region called Letten. The expansion is planned for 2027 and introduces new enemies, characters and abilities.

Heavyweights of Action and Science Fiction

Several major franchises also received new trailers and announcements:

  • Gears of War: E-Day: The Coalition presented more of its prequel to Gears of War. It launches on October 6, 2026.
  • CONTROL Resonant: Remedy showed more of its supernatural action sequel, expanding the strange world introduced in CONTROL.
  • Rainbow Six Tactics: Ubisoft revealed a turn-based tactical strategy game set in the Rainbow Six universe, planned for 2027.
  • Metro 2039: The next entry in the atmospheric post-apocalyptic series received a new look ahead of its planned 2027 release.

RPGs, Fantasy and the Growing Chinese Presence

Asian developers were strongly represented throughout the showcase, particularly in the RPG and fantasy genres:

  • Nodusfall (HoYoverse): A darker fantasy action game from the creators of Genshin Impact. No release date has been announced.
  • Final Fantasy VII Revelation: Square Enix presented new footage from the third and final chapter of the modern Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, planned for Spring 2027.
  • Tides of Annihilation: The dark action game set in a ruined, Arthurian-inspired London received a new story trailer.
  • Aniimo: The open-world creature-collecting RPG confirmed its release for September 16, 2026.

Gamescom 2026 Is Only Getting Started

While Opening Night Live (ONL) delivered many of the week's biggest announcements, Gamescom 2026 itself runs from August 26 to August 30 in Cologne.

That means the ONL showcase was only the beginning. Throughout the event, visitors can experience playable demos, developer presentations, interviews and additional showcases across the Koelnmesse exhibition grounds.

For CD PROJEKT RED, Gamescom is particularly important this year, with visitors getting the opportunity to see The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Songs of the Past and the new remaster in more detail on the show floor.

With major announcements from The Witcher, Gears of War, Final Fantasy, Metro, Rainbow Six and other major franchises, Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026 delivered a strong start to one of the biggest gaming events of the year.
