Sony and Santa Monica Studio surprised players in February 2026 with a brand-new entry in the beloved God of War franchise: God of War: Sons of Sparta. Released worldwide on February 12, 2026 exclusively for the PlayStation 5, this title reimagines the series in a fresh genre while staying firmly rooted in the classical saga’s lore.

🚀 A Surprise Prequel With a Fresh Perspective

Rather than following the modern Norse arc of recent entries like God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök (2022), Sons of Sparta returns to the Greek era of Kratos’ life, but with a twist. Instead of the typical 3D action format, this installment is a 2D action-platformer / Metroidvania that blends classic side-scroll gameplay with God of War’s trademark depth.

Developed in collaboration between Santa Monica Studio and Mega Cat Studios, this title explores Kratos’ youth during his Spartan training alongside his brother Deimos at the Agoge, the brutal Spartan rite of passage.

Sons of Sparta offers:

The story serves as a prequel within the God of War canon, taking place before even Ascension and Ghost of Sparta. Kratos and Deimos embark on a mission to find a missing cadet, which becomes a crucible test of their Spartan training, brotherhood, and sense of honor.

The narrative emphasizes themes of duty, honor, brotherhood, and the formative experiences that shaped Kratos long before he became the Ghost of Sparta.

The game features TC Carson returning as the voice of Kratos, marking his first portrayal of the character in over a decade.
